DAY 1 – Upington – Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

We depart 830 from Upington to drive 260km to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Stop en route at the Khomani Bushmen. Check in at Twee Rivieren, and go for an afternoon game drive until the gates close. Optional night drive with rangers/ morning walk.

Game such as Gemsbok, springbok, giraffe, blue wildebeest and red hartebeest can be seen in relative abundant numbers.

Kgalagadi is well known for good sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah, spotted – and brown hyena. Smaller animals like mice, whistling rats, birds and insects shows the eco-system is healthy Kgalagadi is home to caracal, honey badger, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, cape fox, African wildcat, mongoose and meerkat.

Kgalagadi is a bird watcher’s haven with more than 260 species including 20 larger raptor species. The world’s heaviest flying bird, the Kori bustard and the proud secretary bird patrol the riverbeds while the loud black korhaan can be seen in the dunes.

DAY 2 – Twee Rivieren – Nossob

Game drive 160km to Nossob. Lunch at an unfenced picnic spot. Late afternoon arrival. Nossob has a game hide and short botanical route inside the camp. Electricity switch off at 22h00 and starts at 5h00. Optional night drive.

DAY 3 – Kgalagadi Trans Frontier Park

Early game drive South until Dikbaardskolk, where we cross to the Auob river bed. Then North towards Mata Mata. We do several game drives in this area until the gates close. Optional night drive.

DAY 4 – Kgalagadi – Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

We enter Namibia at the Mata Mata Border Post and drive through the endless savanna of Southern Namibia to Ai Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. We visit the Giant’s Playground, Quiver Tree Forest as well as Namibia’s second largest dam, the Naute dam, close to Keetmanshoop. Drive on to Ai Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. It contains some of the most spectacular scenery of the arid and desert environments in Southern Africa. The Orange River forms the border between South Africa and Namibia, and comprises theAi Ais Hot Springs Game Park (Namibia) and Richtersveld National Park (RSA)

Important features: Ai Ais Hot springs and the Fish River Canyons ( second largest in the world) It measures 161 km in length, up to 27 km wide with a depth of 550 m. This desert zone is characterised by an impressive range of succulent plant species, and is a hot spot for Bio-diversity.

We enter the Transfrontier Park at Hobas. Visit the Fish River Canyon, with different viewpoints overlooking the canyon. We can see springbok, gemsbok, red hartebeest, Hartman’s zebra, kudu, klipspringer and ostrich in this Park. We drive on through the 103 000 ha private conservation area called Godnwana National Park to Ai-Ais. Ai-Ais, or burning water – is named after the sulphurous hot springs in this area. One of these springs has its origins within the camp. Ai-Ais is situated at the southern end of the Fish River Canyon. We take a relaxing swim in the warm pools and spa.

DAY 5 – Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

Today we drive to Sendelingsdrift Border Post through the plains of southern Namibia. The road runs parallel with the Orange River through Southern Namibia. We enter South Africa by crossing the Orange River by means of a ferry-boat. ThRichetersveld Mountain Desert is known as the only true desert and one of the last wilderness areas in South Africa and was declared aWorld Heritage site. Rainfall is less than 50 mm per year. The Park is placed in a 100 km half-circle of the Lower Orange River (which forms the border with Namibia)

Richtersveld is very rich in succulent plant life, containing 30% of South Africa’s succulent species, (3 Quiver tree species and the rare “halfmens”) Game species such as the extremely rare Hartman’s Zebra, Grey Reebok, Klipspringer, Duiker, Steenbok, Leopard, Caracal, Black backed jackal, Baboons and Vervet monkeys can be seen. A small number of indigenous people, making a living as goatherds, live here like their ancestors did for thousands of years.

DAY 6 – Ais-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

We do game drives, visiting interesting scenery / doing short hikes.

DAY 7 – Ais-Ais/Richtersveld – Alexander Bay – Springbok

Toady we drive to Alexander Bay – a small coastal town at the cold Atlantic Ocean. We visit the estuary at the Orange River mouth near Alexander Bay. The Orange River wetland is a RAMSAR site and is home to 60 bird species (including pelicans and flamingos) After a visit to the river mouth we drive on to the Lichen Hill. The Richtersveld vegetation has unique species with special adoptions to survive in this desert climate. One kilometer outside Alexander Bay, a hill of 5 hectares is covered with lichen – the only one of its kind in South Africa. Lichen is not a plant or animal and its consisting of algae and fungi living together in perfect symbioses. We drive south along the coastline to the small harbour town called Port Nolloth. Its economy is totally dependent on crayfish and diamonds. We visit the harbour. Continue via Springbok to Klein Pella. We drive on to Springbok in the world famous Namaqualand. During the flower season AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER the most incredible flowers can be seen. We drive around in this area to visit the special points.

DAY 8 – Springbok – Augrabies Falls National Park

Depart to Augrabies Falls while travelling through vast empty streches of Bushmanland and the small town called Pofadder. Visit the Augrabies Falls (6th highest Falls in the world) Augrabies comes from the Khoi San Bushmen meaning ‘place of great noise. We do several game drives lin this desert land to visit viewpoints such as Ararat, Oranjekom on the Orange River Gorge, Moon Rock, Echo corner and the Black hills. Game such as giraffe, springbok, gemsbok, eland, kudu red hartebeest, Hartman’s zebra and klipspringer survive in the desert ecosystem. Fish eagles and black eagles are common.

DAY 9 – Augrabies-Upington

After doing the 5 km Dassie Trail (only for the fit) we do game drives and visit the viewpoints. At 14h00 we depart to Upington. Stop at Bezalel Wine farm for wine tasting. Late afternoon arrival Upington. End of tour.

Excluded: daily conservation fees, optional night drives with rangers, cross-border fees.
